He first served in this role in 1993, when he replaced the dismissed Aldo Agroppi in Florence, but was no longer able to save his old club from the bitter descent into the second division. This scenario repeated itself in 2002 when Chiarugi inherited the unsuccessful Roberto Mancini, but was soon released himself and replaced by Ottavio Bianchi, who could not avoid going into second division for Fiorentina. There he won his first English title in the first season as Liverpool won the championship.

Castellini certainly knew how to impress with his performances and attracted the interest of Italy's top clubs. Already in his first season as a goalkeeper for Turin, Castellini managed to win the Coppa Italia, the Italian football cup, as a regular player. After four league games on the Inter bench, Castellini was replaced by Hodgson and from then on continued to work as a goalkeeping coach. After the Englishman Roy Hodgson was sacked in May 1997 shortly after losing the UEFA Cup final against FC Schalke 04, Internazionale appointed the previous goalkeeping coach Luciano Castellini as his interim successor. He later became a goalkeeping coach and also coached Inter Milan's first division team twice on an interim basis. AC Milan were defeated 5-3 on penalties in the decisive final round match after being goalless at the end of regular time and also after the end of extra time. Starting the following season as defending champions, they almost repeated their success, but in the end they were one point short of another championship, roma jersey which Juventus won this time.
